Canadian FM reaches Matera

Matera, June 29, 2021  (TDI):  Marc Garneau, Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs has reached Matera, Italy to participate in the G20 Ministerial Meeting.

The purpose of this visit is to partake in significant discussions at the G20, about various topics such as global governance, multilateralism, sustainable development, Africa, and food security.

Foreign Minister of Canada spoke with his Italian counterpart, Luigi Di Maio, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy.

During the meeting, March Garneau praised Italy for co-hosting the Global Coalition Against Daesh Ministerial Meeting and the G20 Ministerial meeting. Foreign Minister March appreciated Italian  the efforts for international cooperation and multilateralism

Both sides discussed a range of issues of mutual interest including bilateral trade and other matters of interest.

Both sides also acknowledge the fact that Canada and Italy are working together on the global scene and recognize the fact that both countries should work together for mutual interests.

Canadian Foreign Minister at G20 Ministerial Meeting 

Canadian Foreign Minister participated, among others, in the G20 Ministerial meeting held in Italy. Minister Garneau shared about the Canadian position on multilateralism and emphasized the need to focus on supporting developing countries.

Garneau also highlighted that Canada always emphasis on an inclusive, resilient recovery and an effective rules-based international system.

Foreign Minister Garneau also joined the counterparts virtually to discuss solutions to the most pressing development challenges, including financing for sustainable development.

During his visit, Minister Garneau had fruitful bilateral meetings with his counterparts from France, India, Mexico, the Netherlands, Singapore, and Spain.

  • G20 members consist of the world’s major economies and represent all inhabited continents, 80% of global economic output, 60% of the world’s population, and 75% of international trade.
  • Italy assumed the G20 presidency on December 1, 2020, focusing on 3 broad, interconnected pillars: people, planet, and prosperity.
