Montreal, 22 August 2022 (TDI): The Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, touched down in Montreal on Sunday evening for a visit to Canada. Canadian government officials at the airport welcomed him.
The Chancellor of Germany and Prime Minister of Canada held the first meeting in Montreal on Monday. The Chancellor thanked the Prime Minister of Canada for his warm welcome.

Additionally, the two will also visit Toronto, where the Prime Minister will take part in the virtual summit about Russia’s annexation of Crimea. It will be followed by an appearance at the Canada-Germany Business Forum.
Subsequently, the trip will conclude with a stop in Stephenville, N.L., where both sides will attend a hydrogen trade show. Moreover, the Chancellor will be accompanied throughout the tour by vice-chancellor Robert Habeck, who is in charge of the country’s energy file.
Aim of the visit:
The visit’s main aim is to discuss energy security and the transition to clean energy. The two sides will also discuss secure access to key resources like clean hydrogen and critical minerals.
In Stephenville, the leaders are expected to sign a pact to set timelines and targets for exporting hydrogen to Germany. Moreover, the two sides will also discuss taking strong climate action through policies like pollution pricing.
Furthermore, the Chancellor’s visit will help advance the Canada-Germany trade relationship. Correspondingly, it will attract investments in automotive, electric vehicle manufacturing, bio-manufacturing, and life sciences.

The Deputy Prime Minister of Canada, Chrystia Freeland, greeted the Chancellor at Montreal-Trudeau International airport upon their arrival on Sunday evening. She welcomed the Chancellor and hoped his visit would bring the two countries closer.
