Port-au-Prince, 22 January 2022 (TDI): Canada hosted a meeting with Foreign Ministers and leaders from international organizations to help Haiti find sustainable solutions to its new problems.
Foreign Affairs Minister of Canada, Mélanie Joly met with counterparts and the organizations virtually.
The Haitian Prime Minister, other 19 countries, representatives of the United Nations, and other international organizations participated in the session.
The focus of the discussions went to the recent situation in Haiti and the crucial role of support and coordination of international assistance. It was to ensure effective and structured efforts for long-term results.
The participants addressed issues that included the enhancement of public security. For instance, they focused on promoting an open and inclusive political dialogue, governance, humanitarian, and reconstruction needs.
Furthermore, all the participants reaffirmed their solidarity and the importance of promoting effective assistance activities to the Haitian people.
To tackle insecurity, the partakers agreed to emphasize their support to Haiti in security. For instance, they will continue collaborations with the National Police to promote the respect of the rule of law, justice, and human rights. As it happens, the participants agreed that stability in politics is a possibility if all the stakeholders get together to find equitable solutions for the country.
All the participants await the next session that Haiti and the United Nations will organize soon. The next meeting will focus on Fund recollection for reconstruction after the earthquake of august 14,2021 that occurred in Haiti.
Canada And Haiti relationship
Both Nations started official diplomatic relations in 1954 and engaged in friendly and cordial interactions. They cooperate in areas such as trade, development, and security in general.
In the multilateral sphere, Canada and Haiti are members of similar International Organizations.
For instance, the Organization of American States, United Nations, International Organization of la Francophonie.
