Phnom Penh, 25 October 2021 (TDI): The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cambodia released a statement to announce that the country will jointly work with Vietnam on the issue of unmarked land borders.
The collaboration will aim to implement mutually acceptable solutions to complete the remaining 16 percent of the unmarked land perimeter between them. The decision was made in a video conference.
Both sides welcomed the official ceremony for the exchange of legal documents. The legal documents record the demarcation of 84% boundary between the two states.
Cambodia-Vietnam Relations
Cambodia and Vietnam have historical ties. The establishment of diplomatic relations between the two created a legal basis. Resultantly, it encouraged the people of the two countries to further strengthen their solidarity. After the Paris Peace Agreements in October 1991, the relationship between the two neighbors improved as both sides regularly exchanged, supported and helped each other in socio-economic aspects.
Cambodian Border Affairs Committee
The Deputy Chairwoman of the Cambodian Border Affairs Committee’s (CBAC), Koy Pisey stated that the border demarcation with Vietnam is an ongoing process. It is an unpredictable task and depends on the location. According to her statement, experts from both countries agreed to use a map with a scale of 1/100,000. Nevertheless, there can be differences between the border on the map and the situation on the ground.
Consequently, under such circumstances, the two countries’ border experts negotiate. The negotiation with Vietnam had been halted since last year when the two contiguous neighbors declared the demarcation of 84 percent of the 1,270-kilometer border.
Remaining territories
The remaining border issues are in six provinces. The Ratanakiri, Mondulkiri, Svay Rieng, Kampot, Takeo, and Kandal provinces. Presently there are 315 border markers between Cambodia and Vietnam.
