Blue Economy is very important for over all economic progress

Phnom Penh, 4 December 2021 (TDI): Cambodia hosted the 7th Ministerial Forum at the East Asia Summit Conference on Maritime Security Cooperation 2021. The Minister of Environment of Cambodia, Say Samal chaired the meeting. It was held at the coastal Preah Sihanouk province.

The theme of the Summit was “Creating a New Decade for the Well-Being of Human, Ocean, and Economy.” The objective of the meeting was to review the accomplishments as well as share expertise among the member states.

Also, it was focused on the determination of opportunities to conserve the marine and coastal environment. A roadmap was also discussed during the meeting.

During the meeting, the Environment Minister of Cambodia underscored that his country is committed to supporting Blue Economy. The country will undertake the principle to promote equitable and sustainable socio-economic development, at the international level.

In the backdrop of advanced marine science and ecosystem rehabilitation, the world needs to jointly collaborate. There is a need for a joint effort to exploit every opportunity for the achievement of sustainable development goals along with the realization of the joint vision.

Estimates claim that the blue economy will be worth $1.4 trillion and it has an important role in income generation, food security, and recreation, and beyond.

The Summit takes place after every three years. The member countries are Cambodia, Singapore, South Korea, China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Timor-Leste, Japan, Lao PDR, North Korea, and Vietnam as well as other partner organizations.

The Blue Economy is related to the preservation, exploitation, and regeneration of the marine environment. As per the definition of the World Bank sustainable exploitation of the ocean resources for the sake of improved livelihoods, economic growth as well as jobs whilst also preserving the health of the ocean’s ecosystem is a Blue Economy.

European Union defines the Blue Economy as any and every economic activity related to coasts, seas, and oceans.
