Bonn, 7 June 2022 (TDI): The annual UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn has begun this year. The goal of the conference is to establish the groundwork for success at COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.
Governments are convening for the first time since the UN Climate Change Conference COP26 concluded in Glasgow last November.
This is where the Paris Agreement’s operational elements were agreed. As a result, the period of agreement implementation has begun.
Also, governments will concentrate their efforts in Bonn on a number of crucial areas. Mitigation, adaptation, and assistance to underdeveloped countries are among them. They will concentrate on finance, as well as loss and harm.
Patricia Espinosa, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, addressed delegates at the start of the Bonn sessions. She underlined the need for political interventions and decisions in each of these areas.
In light of this, it will result in a well-balanced product. These steps will send a strong statement to the rest of the world that we are on the right track. This is because, in Sharm El-Sheikh, the world will be asking one question: “How far have you come since Glasgow?” she remarked.
Bonn Climate Change Conference discussions
Climate change, according to the UN’s top climate change official, is accelerating more rapidly. Thus, requiring greater ambition to avoid the worst effects of climate change is key. In Bonn, immediate action and progress are critical.
The shared ideas occurred as a result of the world’s current path. It is on course to more than double the Paris Agreement’s 1.5 °C objective by the end of the century. They argued that these negotiations must move forward more swiftly since the rest of the world expects it.
The world is aware of the commitment made to fulfill the 1.5 degree Celsius goal set out in the Paris Agreement. As a result, that commitment necessitated more rapid action and more climate ambition.
It is necessary to avoid making inappropriate excuses, such as the fact that the globe is going through a difficult period.
In addition, they claimed that the world is aware that climate change is not on the agenda, and leaders cannot afford to deviate from the global schedule. The focus of the COP27 in Egypt will be on implementation.
Nations are expected to show how they will begin implementing the Paris Agreement in their own territories. There will be the use of laws, policies, and initiatives to achieve this across all powers and industries.
UN Climate Change Executive Secretary’s departing address
Patricia Espinosa announced the end of her term in office in an emotional speech. After six years at the top of the UN Climate Change Secretariat, she has stepped down. She urged delegates to keep supporting the secretariat’s work and inclusive multilateralism.
This includes all key stakeholders’ efforts to address climate change. She reflected on the successes made in the last six to thirty years as she looked back on major milestones in the UN Climate Change process.
Lastly, she stated that the UNFCCC, Kyoto Protocol, and Paris Agreement have improved the world’s situation. She also noted that this is due to collaboration, multilateralism, and the efforts of everyone.
