Washinton D.C., 11 December 2021 (TDI): President of the United States of America, Joe Biden, hosted the first-ever Summit for Democracy. Leaders from over 100 countries participated in the Summit. It aimed to improve the working of all democracies. The theme of the Summit was “to renew democracy at home and confront autocracies abroad”.
The summit took place on 9th and 10th December in virtual format.
The participants were states governments, civil societies, activists, and some leaders of the private sector.
The Summit’s goal was to improve the democratic system commitment of the participants and fight its threats. It was meant for evolution, and it shows that the system or society still needs improvement. In this case, it is the application of Democracy. Moreover, when the topic of cooperation was set, the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and inequality were subjects tackled also.
Furthermore, the summit centered itself around 3 principal themes which were, first fighting the authoritarianism system, second fighting corruption, and finally, promoting the respect of Human Rights.
During the session, the White House stated that it will work with the US congress to furnish $ 424.4 million to boost democracy and support independent news providers. In particular, this fund will also help, advancing technology, funding for elections and political processes.
Speaking at the occasion, President Biden stated that democracy doesn’t happen by accident, it is the people who have to renew it generation by generation. So this event is a way to make countries evaluate themself and improve what is wrong.
He further added democracy does not happen by accident. It needs improvement with each new generation and renewing democracy is a defining challenge of contemporary time.
The Summit highlighted that democracy is a matter that concerns all and can be improved. Moreover, it was established that next year in 2022 there will be another session of the summit.
