Ankara (TDI): Azerbaijan and Türkiye have officially opened the Igdir-Nakhchivan Gas Pipeline.
This new project will help Nakhchivan, a region of Azerbaijan, get a direct and reliable supply of natural gas from Türkiye.
The pipeline is 97.5 kilometres long, with 80 kilometres in Türkiye and 17.5 kilometres in Azerbaijan.
It can carry 2 million cubic meters of gas per day, which is enough to meet Nakhchivan’s yearly gas needs of about 400-500 million cubic meters.
Before this project, Nakhchivan was getting its gas from Iran through a swap agreement made in 2005.
Now, with the new pipeline, Nakhchivan has another source of gas.
In this way, it will improves energy security and makes sure the region has a stable and continuous supply of gas.
The opening of the pipeline was celebrated in an online event.
President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Türkiye discussed the strong partnership between the both states.

President Aliyev added that this pipeline is important because it helps connect the two countries even more and brings benefits to the whole region.
President Aliyev mentioned, “The project we are inaugurating today will ensure the energy security of Nakhchivan.”
He also mentioned that the Nakhchivan is an ancient Azerbaijani land and that it was separated in 1920, when Soviet government handed over West Zangezur to Armenia.
This move cut off the land connection between Nakhchivan and the remaining of Azerbaijan.
