This date is connected to the large-scale ethnic cleansing perpetrated by Armenians against Azerbaijanis in different regions of the country in 1918. On 31 March 1918, the killing of peaceful Azerbaijanis started in Baku city.
Armenian forces along with Bolsheviks committed the genocide. The genocide lasted for about three days. During these three days, Azerbaijani communities were attacked and locals were
However, the hostility and hatred of Armenia towards Azerbaijanis goes back to earlier times. Armenians have committed massacres at different times. The first openly committed genocide of the Azerbaijanis was in 1905-1907.
Thousands of Azerbaijanis were ruthlessly annihilated in these massacres. Furthermore, the Armenian massacres of innocent Azerbaijanis in the Caucasus were not restricted to this.
Consequently, in March-April 1918 in Baku as well as other regions of Azerbaijan, thousands were slain for their national and religious affiliation. Correspondingly, historical monuments, mosques, settlements, and cemeteries were plundered and desecrated.
After the establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (ADR) in May 1918, an Extraordinary Commission of Inquiry was created to investigate the brutality.
Nevertheless, it was only after the restoration of the independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan in 1991 that this issue gained importance. The Azerbaijani National Leader, Heydar Aliyev initiated an investigation into the bloody genocide.
Along these lines, a historic decree was inscribed on March 26, 1998, and March 31 was declared the “Day of the Genocide of Azerbaijanis.” Ever since, every year, Azerbaijan marks March 31 as the day of genocide to remember the victims is commemorated.
