Karachi, 19 November 2022 (TDI): The Minister for Defense Industry of Azerbaijan, Madat Guliyev headed a delegation at the 11th International Defense Exhibition IDEAS 2022 in Pakistan.

During the visit, Madat Guliyev met the Federal Minister for Defense Production of Pakistan, Muhammad Israr Tareen. At IDEAS 2022, Muhammad Israr Tareen welcomed Guliyev and highlighted Pakistan and Azerbaijan’s friendly and cooperative relations.

In the meeting, both discussed the issues of mutual interests and the potential for military-technical collaboration. Minister Israr Tareen emphasized the value of collaboration between the two nations.

In this vein, he said that there are chances to expand their shared military manufacturing cooperation. Moreover, he also reaffirmed Pakistan’s continued support for Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and defense.

The Minister visited the Turkish Defense Industry Committee’s exhibit and became familiar with the other stands at the international defense show.

Azerbaijan-Pakistan Relations

The diplomatic ties between Pakistan and Azerbaijan were established on 9 June 1992 and Pakistan was one of the first countries to recognize Azerbaijan.

This year marked the 30th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. Regardless of their geographical distance, Pakistan and Azerbaijan share a unique political tie.

Several gatherings have been held since Azerbaijan’s independence to examine ways to increase bilateral trade as well as multidimensional collaboration. Moreover, there is a strong strategic partnership between the two nations.

Both nations also have good military relations. Pakistan and Azerbaijan are in negotiations over the sale of JF-17 Thunder multirole fighter aircraft. Plans to conduct joint military drills were confirmed by President Aliyev and Prime Minister Sharif in October 2016.

Over the previous ten years, Pakistani military professionals trained a hundred or more Azerbaijani military units. Azerbaijan was also willing to buy Super Mushak trainer planes from Pakistan.

Azerbaijan conducted joint military exercises with Pakistan and Turkey on September 12, 2021. Furthermore, Pakistan was one of the first nations to publicly support Azerbaijan during the 44-day conflict with Armenia in 2020.
