Australia Urges Israel Against Gaza Takeover, Warns of Humanitarian Catastrophe

Sydney (TDI): Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said in a statement on Friday that Australia urges Israel “not to go down the path” of taking control of Gaza.

Wonng said that, “Australia calls on Israel to not go down this path, which will only worsen the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.”

Australian Foreign Minister said that the forced displacement was a grave violation of international law and urged a permanent ceasefire and uninterrupted aid, and for Hamas to return the hostages.

“A two-state solution is the only pathway to secure an enduring peace – a Palestinian state and the State of Israel, living side-by-side in peace and security within internationally-recognized borders,” she added.

Unlike other Western countries such as Canada, the UK, and France, Australia has yet not announce the recognition of a Palestinian state but has said that it will decide at “an appropriate time.”

Penny Wong’s comments came after Israeli Prime Minister said that he will take military control over all of Gaza. On Friday, after a security cabinet meeting, the Israeli government confirmed the plan to take over Gaza.

A statement issued said that, “The Security Cabinet has approved the Prime Minister’s proposal for defeating Hamas. The IDF will prepare for taking control of Gaza City while distributing humanitarian assistance to the civilian population outside the combat zones.”

The latest satellite imagery has revealed that the Israeli military is amassing troops and equipment near the Gaza border, potentially in preparation for a new ground invasion of the Palestinian territory.

This week, the Prime Minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, also spoke with the head of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas. He also pledged to meet Abbas on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in September, where Australia might recognize a Palestinian statehood.
