The Indo-Pacific Dialogue is a crucial component of Australia and the Republic of Korea’s collaboration in supporting a peaceful, prosperous, and secure region.

The Dialogue was chaired by Craig Chittick, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) First Assistant Secretary US and Indo-Pacific Strategy Division.

Moreover, DFAT First Assistant Secretary North and South Asia Division, Gary Cowan, and Lim Sang-woo, ROK’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Director-General North American Affairs, were also part of the dialogue.

Australia and South Korea’s relations

Australia and South Korea have a strong bilateral relationship and are comprehensive strategic partners. The Republic of Korea is Australia’s fourth-largest export market and trade partner.

Both states have strong ties with the United States and are dedicated to a free Indo-Pacific region. They also jointly support the denuclearization of North Korea and peace in the Korean Peninsula.

Within the G20, APEC, the East Asia Summit (EAS), the ASEAN Regional Forum, and the MIKTA grouping, Australia and the ROK work closely together.

The President of South Korea Moon Jae-in conducted a state visit to Australia from December 12–15 in 2021. During his visit, the two states marked the 60th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic relations.

Apart from this, during the South Korean President’s visit, both states elevated the bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP).

Shared principles, a strong economic partnership, strong people-to-people ties, and mutual strategic objectives serve as the foundation of the Australia-ROK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
