Canberra, 26 January 2022 (TDI): Today, January 26th is being celebrated as Australia Day in Australia. Australia Day is a public holiday on January 26th of every year and is Australia’s national day.

It commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet of British Ships at Port Jackson, New South Wales, and Captain Arthur Philip Raised the flag on the same date of 1788. Said Day was renowned as the “Foundation Day” in the early nineteenth century and was celebrated with sports events.

Horseracing was popular up to the 1820s, but regattas had taken over by the 1830s. Later, the Commonwealth Government, States, and Territories decided in 1946 to have one national day – ‘Australia Day’ – under one banner and on the same day.

When January 26th falls on a Saturday or Sunday in any state or territory of Australia, said public holiday is transferred to the following Monday. However, the Australia Day public holiday was still held on the Monday closest to January 26th.

It wasn’t until 1994 that all of the states and territories agreed to celebrate Australia Day on the actual day, rather than the closest Monday. Since then the events of the United Australia day have been celebrated on January 26th or the following Monday in each year.
