Washington, 23 October 2021 (TDI): The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutters on Thursday. Both the officials discussed global issues of vital importance including Afghanistan.
During the conversation, both the officials also deliberated over the worsening conflict in Ethiopia and its impact on humanitarian aid. US State Secretary Blinken also extended USA’s appreciation to the UN Secretary-General for its efforts and services in Ethiopia under such harsh and challenging conditions.
The UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutters also discussed with Secretary Blinken the opportunities to increase and strengthen international cooperation to promote peace and negotiations to solve conflicts and end hostilities.
It is important to note here that the US is one of the most important parts of the United Nations system. As the UN was established as a result of the devastation of the Second World War and the US-led that initative. Apart from being the largest sponsor of the UN in terms of finance, the US is also hosting the UN Headquarters in New York. The US is also the five members states in the UN Security Council as the permanent member.
There were also reports that the US has been thinking to terminate its UN Membership. it was during President Trump’s administration that the US withdrew from the United Nations Human Rights Council, UNESCO, and later from WHO despite the spike of the COVID-19 pandemic. These drastic measures were rescinded by the incumbent President Joe Biden.
