Islamabad, 2 January 2023 (TDI): Ambassador Sohail Mahmood has succeeded Ambassador Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry as the Director-General of the Institute of Strategic Studies (ISSI) in Islamabad.

Sohail Mahmood has expertise in diplomacy and high-level decision-making. He spent nearly 37 years working for Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry, rising to the position of Foreign Secretary, which he held from April 2019 to September 2022.

He held the position of Pakistan’s High Commissioner to India from 2017 to 2019. Prior to this, he worked as an Ambassador to Thailand (2015–17) and Turkey (2009-13).

He has also held the positions of Director-General (Americas), Director-General (Foreign Secretary’s Office), Additional Secretary (Afghanistan/West Asia), and Director-General.

Ambassador Sohail Mahmood has a Master of International Affairs degree from Columbia University in New York and a Master of History degree from Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad.
