After the outbreak of the HIV pandemic, scientists formed the IAS in 1988. The aim of IAS is to bring experts together to promote a concerted HIV response. These experts include scientists, policymakers, and activists. They come together to accelerate the scientific response, build global solidarity and promote human dignity for HIV/AIDS patients.

The IAS also hosts meetings such as the International AIDS Conference, the IAS Conference on HIV Science, and the HIV Research for Prevention Conference.
