Kabul, 06 August 2021 (TDI): In a joint statement, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Policy and EU Commissioner for Crisis Management ratcheted up the Taliban’s attacks, particularly on UNAMA’s office in Herat, Lashkar Gah. The continuation of fighting and the attack on the Minister of Defense’s home, both of which resulted in civilian deaths, are firmly denounced.
The European Union called for an immediate, extensive, and perpetual ceasefire in the statement, noting that the continuation of horrific violence has exacerbated Afghans suffering and death, as well as an escalation in the number of displaced people.
The statement went on to say that the Taliban’s violence was in direct opposition to the Doha Peace Accords, which aim to end the war through a negotiation process. According to the statement, international humanitarian law and human rights infringements, such as irrational killings, desert trials, public brutality of women, and the devastation of public infrastructure in Taliban-held areas, have flabbergasted Afghanistan. These are regarded as war crimes, and Taliban fighters and commanders are to blame and should face prosecution.
The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs greets this statement and impulses the European Union to exert pressure on the Taliban to bring war criminals to justice and put an end to the bloodshed and killings.
