Kabul, 12 August 2021 (TDI): On Wednesday, Mohammad Haneef Atmar, Foreign Minister of Afghanistan, had a conversation with Peter Jennings, Executive Director of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI).

When asked a question during the interview, the Foreign Minister stated that the Taliban must be made aware of the importance of adhering to international norms. Sanctions against the Taliban may be imposed as part of this. He also said that the United Nations Security Council must coordinate with Pakistan to demolish the Taliban’s sanctuaries and supply lines. He went on to say that China has a keen interest in Afghanistan because Chinese security is under threat. The Taliban-sponsored East Turkmenistan Islamic Movement is part of Daesh’s international network. He stressed a more active and strong engagement from China, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and India for peace and reconciliation purposes.

Foreign Minister proposed that the United Nations should play a much bigger role in mediation. It could aid in providing a multilateral setting in which each country can present its viewpoint and work towards a peaceful settlement.
