Addis Ababa, 22 August 2022 (TDI): C40 cities and Bloomberg Philanthropies announced 20 finalists for the 2022 C40 Cities Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards.

C40 is a network of mayors of nearly 100 world-leading cities collaborating to deliver the urgent action needed right now to confront the climate crisis. Addis Ababa is among the top 20 finalists to qualify for the 2022 Bloomberg Philanthropies Award.

Addis Ababa and nine other major African cities signed the C40 clean air declaration. It is signed prior to the  2022 UN Climate Change Conference.

The declaration’s agenda is to recognize that breathing clean air is a human right and commit to working towards safer air quality that meets World Health Organization Air Quality Guidelines.

Addis Ababa’s Commitment

Ethiopia’s capital is committed to establishing city-wide baseline air quality levels. It is resilient to reducing major sources of air pollution by implementing emissions standards for both public and private vehicles by 2025.

City’s Mayor Adanech Abiebie in the C40’s statement said Addis Ababa City has committed to improving air quality and building a clean and healthy city.

Ethiopia is committing to accelerating immediate action in critical sectors. The country’s top priority is to the improvement of waste management in Addis Ababa through decentralized composting and recycling.

“The C40 Cities Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards celebrate a diverse set of local actions that are making a strong impact on the world around us,” said C40 Executive Director Mark Watts.

The C40 Cities Bloomberg Philanthropies Awards recognize urban climate action. The finalists for the awards include 20 city projects leading the path to a greener future.

The awards celebrate the most ambitious and impactful projects from around the world to tackle the global climate crisis. The announcement of the winners is on 19th October 2022 at the C40 World Mayors Summit in Buenos Aires.
