Pakistan Reaffirms Support for One-China Policy

United Nations (TDI): At a seminar held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Pakistan reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the One-China Policy, emphasizing that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China.

Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UN, Asim Ahmad, stated that the country’s support for China on this issue is “ironclad” and rooted in deep strategic cooperation and shared friendship.

The event, hosted by the Permanent Mission of China to the UN, was attended by around 40 diplomats and academics. The seminar commemorated the 80th anniversary of Taiwan’s recovery in 1945 and underscored the importance of upholding General Assembly Resolution 2758, which in 1971 recognized the PRC as the only legitimate representative of China in the United Nations.

Resolution 2758, adopted by an overwhelming majority on October 25, 1971, expelled Taiwan from the UN and restored China’s rightful position in the global body. Ambassador Asim Ahmad recalled that Pakistan played a pivotal role in championing this resolution, under the leadership of Pakistan’s Agha Shahi, who spearheaded the campaign to restore China’s rights at the UN, 23 years after its liberation.

“This was a seminal event in world politics,” Ambassador Ahmad remarked, emphasizing how it revitalized the UN’s strength and legitimacy. He lauded China for its significant contributions to global peace and security since its return to the UN, playing a central role in upholding the principles of the UN Charter.

The Pakistani envoy highlighted China’s peaceful rise on the world stage, under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, and its role as a champion of development, stability, and win-win cooperation. He expressed confidence that, under Xi’s leadership, China’s peaceful reunification with Taiwan would be realized, in line with the aspirations of the Chinese people and government.

“We remain confident that China will continue to inject renewed dynamism into the UN and play a leading role in revitalizing multilateral diplomacy,” said Ambassador Ahmad, adding that Pakistan would stand firmly behind China in its efforts to address global challenges and reinforce the authority of the UN.

Ambassador Munir Akram, former Pakistan Ambassador to the UN, was also invited to the seminar. He provided a first-hand account of the dramatic UN debates that led to Resolution 2758. Akram recounted how Pakistan, Algeria, and other nations successfully mobilized support to ensure China’s rightful representation in the UN, despite opposition from the United States.

Speaking about the final vote, Akram recalled how the US attempted to label China’s representation as an “important question,” requiring a two-thirds majority, but this maneuver was thwarted, with 55 votes in favor and 59 against. “At that moment, the representatives of Chiang Kai-shek knew the game was up,” Akram said, referring to the Taiwanese delegation’s exit from the General Assembly.
