New York, 7 August 2021 (TDI): Long ago, The United States dropped the world’s first atomic bomb on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, destroying the city and killing 140,000 people. Three days later, it dropped a second bomb on Nagasaki killing another 70,000. Japan surrendered on August 15, ending World War II.
On 6th of August marks 76 years since the US bombing of Hiroshima. It is a reminder of the catastrophic consequences of nuclear weapons. In a video message to the annual Hiroshima Peace Memorial in Japan, UN Sec Antonio emphasized its support for the disarmament commitments & achieve a world free from nuclear weapons. Recognized as a threat to humanity, the mayor of the Japanese city also urged global leaders to unite to eliminate nuclear weapons just as they are united against the coronavirus.
