6th Malaysia-U.S. Senior Officials Dialogue

Putrajaya (TDI): In recognition of the 10th anniversary of the Malaysia-United States Comprehensive Partnership, Malaysia and the United States convened the 6th Malaysia-U.S. Senior Officials’ Dialogue on October 21, 2024, in Putrajaya, Malaysia.

This dialogue was convened to reaffirm the enduring and expanding collaboration between the two nations.

The Malaysian delegation was led by Secretary General Dato’ Sri Amran Mohamed Zin from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while the United States delegation was headed by Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel J. Kritenbrink.

The conversation highlighted the significance of ongoing collaboration across various matters, encompassing trade and investment, peace and security, and public diplomacy.

Both parties expressed their appreciation for the longstanding connections between the two nations, particularly in the realm of economic collaboration.

Malaysia and the United States recognized that enhancing trade and economic relations is essential for deepening cooperation between the two nations.

Both parties also expressed a willingness to engage in further discussions on trade and agricultural matters.

The United States expressed appreciation for Malaysia’s briefing regarding its initiatives aimed at enhancing sustainability particularly through the acknowledgment of sustainable certification systems.

Both parties expressed their commitment to investigating avenues for collaboration aimed at enhancing sustainability.

Subsequently, both parties are actively engaged in the collaborative efforts outlined in the Memorandum of Cooperation on Semiconductor Supply Chain Resilience (MOC) established in 2022.

Additionally, Malaysia and the United States have expressed a mutual interest in enhancing collaboration in the fields of science and technology.

Both states have identified potential areas for synergy, including space exploration, biotechnology, agriculture, the development of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), capacity-building initiatives, healthcare partnerships, and vaccine research efforts.

Malaysia has expressed admiration for the collaboration provided by the United States in strengthening its maritime security.

In addition, Malaysia also welcomes the arrival of the United States Coast Guard Cutter STEADFAST vessel through the Excess Defense Articles (EDA) program.

In addition, the transfer of the vessel to the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) is anticipated to occur in the first quarter of 2025.

By Building on their defense collaboration, Malaysia and the United States share a rich historical connection, and both parties expressed their appreciation for the ongoing defense initiatives.

Both parties advocated for a diplomatic resolution to promptly de-escalate tensions and establish an immediate truce in Gaza.  Priority should be accorded to the liberation of hostages and individuals held arbitrarily, as well as to guaranteeing unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza.

Both parties emphasized the necessity for a permanent peace that averts additional loss of innocent lives and mitigates further instability in the region.

The 6th Senior Officials’ Dialogue demonstrated the mutual dedication of Malaysia and the United States to promoting prosperity, ensuring regional stability, and enhancing bilateral relations.

The favorable progress of collaboration establishes a robust basis for advancing the Malaysia-United States Comprehensive Partnership to a superior tier.
