Somalia: July 1, 2021 (TDI): Independence Day, or the national day of the Federal Republic of Somalia is celebrated every year on 1st July. The day is observed to celebrate the Republic of Somalia’s independence from Italy in 1960 and was united with British Somaliland. This year marks the 61st Independence Day of the Republic of Somalia.
Somalia was divided between Britain and Italy in Colonial times. The northern part of the region belonged to British Somaliland and other areas to Italy. On June 26, British Somaliland gained independence. On 1st July 1960, the former Italian Somaliland gained independence from Italy and both got unified as the Republic of Somalia.
Somalia is located on the horn of Africa. From the south of the equator northwards to the Gulf of Aden and holds an important geopolitical position between sub-Saharan Africa and Arabia and southwestern Asian countries.
The capital of Somalia is Mogadishu, Islam is the official religion and the official language is Arabic.
