38 Killed in Attack on Passenger Vans in Kurram

KURRAM, (TDI): At least 38 people were killed on Thursday in Kurram district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, when assailants opened fire on two passenger convoys traveling in the Uchat area.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Secretary Nadeem Aslam Chaudhry confirmed the attack, stating that among the victims were a woman and a child. He described the incident as a “major tragedy,” with the death toll expected to rise.

According to local resident Ziarat Hussain, who spoke to Reuters, one convoy was traveling from Peshawar to Parachinar, and the other was traveling in the opposite direction. Armed attackers ambushed the vehicles, opening fire as they passed through the area. Hussain added that his relatives were among those in the convoy traveling from Peshawar.

In response to the attack, President Asif Ali Zardari condemned the assault on the passenger vehicles, calling it an act of violence against innocent people.

The attack in Kurram follows a series of escalating terrorist incidents across Pakistan this year, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

On Wednesday, 12 security personnel were martyred in a suicide bombing in Bannu District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The attack occurred when militants attempted to target a joint check post in the Malikhel area of Bannu. The military’s media wing, ISPR, reported that six attackers were killed in the ensuing firefight, and the attackers later detonated an explosive-laden vehicle in an attempt to breach the post’s perimeter.

The assault was ultimately thwarted by Pakistani forces.
