Macao, 20 December 2022 (TDI): China’s Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) on Tuesday marked the 23rd anniversary of its return to China. A flag-raising ceremony and a reception were held to commemorate the day.

During the reception, Ho Iat Seng, Chief Executive of China’s Macao SAR, asked for further efforts to uphold the “One Country, Two Systems” principle. Also, he talked about promoting the stable development of Macao SAR in the new era.

Moreover, Ho said Macao’s economy, livelihood, and employment had been severely impacted amid recurring COVID-19 outbreaks.

To this, he added, “With the support of the central government, the Macao SAR government had always adhered to the national epidemic prevention policy. It has prioritized people’s safety and health while uniting all sectors of society”.

Ho said that the SAR government had launched financial relief measures to stabilize the economy and employment.

Safeguarding National Security

Moreover, he also added that the Macao SAR government had worked for the implementation of the principle of “patriots governing Macao” and facilitated amendments to the Law on Safeguarding National Security.

The Chief Executive underlined SAR’s efforts to integrate the overall national development plan. Also, the Second Five-Year Plan for Economic and Social Development of the Macao Special Administrative Region had been published.

Looking ahead to 2023, Ho said the SAR government would respond to the latest epidemic-related developments.

Additionally, according to the policy direction, he underscored that Macao would effectively seize opportunities arising from national development.

Also, it will make use of the policies and measures introduced by the central government. The Chief Executive also highlighted to focus on promoting economic recovery and solving conflicts in economic and social development.

However, the reception was held by the Macao SAR government and took place at the China-Portuguese-speaking Countries Commercial and Trade Service Platform Complex.

Prior to the reception, a flag-raising ceremony was also held at the Golden Lotus Square. The Lotus Square or Golden Lotus Square is an open square in Sé, Macau, China.
