Islamabad (TDI): President Asif Ali Zardari departed for Germany on Thursday for a three-day visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations, expanding economic cooperation and advancing trade ties as the two countries mark the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations.
The President’s Office confirmed that Zardari had departed from Lahore, while Pakistan’s Foreign Office said the visit would take place from October 22 to 24 as part of ongoing high-level exchanges between Islamabad and Berlin.
The Foreign Office described the visit as particularly significant in view of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations being commemorated this year, saying it reflected both countries’ commitment to further strengthening their partnership.
During the visit, Zardari is scheduled to meet his German counterpart, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, along with senior German officials and business leaders. Economic and trade cooperation will be a key focus of the discussions, according to the Foreign Office.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah is also expected to accompany the president. His possible participation was discussed during a meeting with German Consul General Thomas E. Schultze.
The visit comes as Pakistan and Germany seek to expand commercial engagement and strengthen links between businesses in the two countries.

In June, a German delegation announced plans to bring around 30 German companies to Pakistan and help connect Pakistani businesses with European markets. The initiative was aimed at creating opportunities for commercial partnerships and expanding access to international markets.
The latest presidential visit provides an opportunity to build on those efforts, particularly through discussions on trade, investment and business-to-business cooperation.
Germany is an important European partner for Pakistan, with bilateral engagement spanning economic relations and broader diplomatic cooperation. The anniversary of diplomatic ties also provides a platform for both governments to review their relationship and explore areas for further collaboration.
The visit follows a September meeting between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
According to the German Foreign Office, Berlin appreciated Pakistan’s mediation efforts in regional conflicts, particularly concerning the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandab. The two sides also agreed on the importance of restarting peace negotiations over Ukraine.
The discussions highlighted the diplomatic dimension of Pakistan-Germany relations alongside their economic partnership, with both countries engaging on regional security and international efforts to address ongoing conflicts.

Zardari’s meetings with German leadership are expected to provide an opportunity to maintain high-level political engagement while exploring practical avenues for closer cooperation.
As Pakistan and Germany commemorate 75 years of diplomatic relations, the visit underscores Islamabad’s efforts to deepen its European partnerships and strengthen economic links with Germany. The emphasis on trade and business engagement will be central to assessing the visit’s potential to translate diplomatic goodwill into concrete commercial opportunities.
