Damascus (TDI): Syrian opposition forces have declared the country “liberated” after storming the capital, Damascus, and announcing that President Bashar al-Assad had fled to an undisclosed location.
The development marks the end of over five decades of al-Assad family rule and 13 years of a devastating civil war.
Across Syria, jubilant celebrations erupted, including in Damascus and along the Lebanese border, with displaced Syrians expressing hope of returning home.
The dramatic opposition victory has drawn international responses, highlighting concerns, hopes, and challenges for Syria’s future.
UN Envoy to Syria
Geir Pedersen emphasized the need for an inclusive political solution to address Syria’s challenges, Al Jazeera reported.
“This must be a process that unites the country, restores sovereignty, and heals deep wounds,” he stated.
United States
President Joe Biden’s administration is closely monitoring developments.
“We are in constant touch with regional partners,” the White House said, underscoring the strategic importance of stability in Syria.
Israel
Israeli minister Amichai Chikli described the situation as “far from a cause for celebration,” citing security concerns.

“The events in Syria demonstrate the destructive nature of political failure,” he remarked at a security forum in Bahrain.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called for an emergency meeting to assess the situation, expressing concern over the unfolding crisis.
China
Beijing stressed its hope for Syria’s quick return to stability while ensuring the safety of Chinese nationals.
“The Chinese embassy remains operational, and we are assisting citizens in need,” the foreign ministry affirmed.
Philippines
Manila urged restraint and called for the safety of its nationals in Syria, advising them to stay in touch with the Philippine Embassy in Damascus.
