World Leader’s commitment towards climate action

New York, 22 September 2021 (TDI): United Nations shared the news on its official Twitter account about the event of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) held on Tuesday, 21 September 2021 to highlight the important commitments made toward climate action by the world’s largest economies, the United States and China.

UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres appreciated important commitments made by the two largest economies. As the President of the United State announced that the “US would considerably boost the international climate finance to $11.4 billion approximately a year.” He hailed the announcement made by Joe Biden during UNGA.

Furthermore, he stated that this increased contribution of the US would bring developed countries closer to meeting their goals to mobilize $100 billion/year in climate finance. He also hailed the announcement of the President of China – Xi Jinping. As the President announced, “China would demolish all financing of coal-fired power plants globally and it will redirect the support to green and low carbon energy.”

The UN Secretary mentioned, “The single most important step to keep the 1.5-degree aim of the Paris Agreement is increasing the global phase-out of coal”. While addressing the members at UNGA, he stated that this is the moment for change, an era of multilateralism. This is our time to build trust, inspire hopes, and also it is an age of possibilities.

During this event, the UN Secretary reminded the members that currently because of extreme 2.7 degrees of heating, the world is on a catastrophic pathway. All members have to take decisive action and contribute to reducing emissions. He supports and encourages the important announcement made on Tuesday, by the leaders of the two largest economies of the world, as China & the US increase Climate Action commitments.
