Wendy Sherman Met with Uzbek President Mirziyoyev

Tashkent, 4 October 2021 (TDI): The US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy R. Sherman held a meeting with Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, today in Tashkent. The officials converged on the US-Uzbekistan bilateral relationship, besides discussing the way forward in Afghanistan.

During the meeting, Deputy Sherman and President Mirziyoyev maintained that the strategic partnership between Uzbekistan and the United States is growing stronger with each day passing as the US encourages Uzbekistan’s government to keep observing the economic and democratic reforms. They also discussed developments and prospects of their bilateral ties, where the US Deputy Secretary of State expressed warm gratitude towards the Uzbek President for his persistent support in Kabul. Moreover, the officials exhibited a joint commitment to combating the Covid-19 pandemic through vaccine distribution and promulgating human rights and democracy in Uzbekistan.

Earlier on Sunday, Deputy Sherman met with Uzbek Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov in Tashkent where the diplomats discussed the overall situation in Central Asia, the latest developments in Afghanistan, and issues of bilateral cooperation. Both sides emphasized facilitating a national reconciliation process and the formation of a truly inclusive government in Kabul that ensures fundamental liberty and human rights along with the prevention of humanitarian crises. They also exchanged views on the upcoming scheduled events, particularly the first meeting of the Strategic Partnership Dialogue.
