WEF gathers world leaders

Davos, 17 January 2024 (TDI): The World Economic Forum gathers world leaders at Davos to address global challenges. The annual summit is a pivotal platform for discussions among public and business sector figures.

This year’s week-long annual summit will focus on climate change, the future of artificial intelligence, and geopolitics. The motto is “Rebuilding trust,” as explained by Mirek Dušek, the Managing Director of the World Economic Forum.

Last week, we released the Global Cooperation Barometer, Transforming Energy Demand, and Global Risks Report. Before the Annual Meeting, Bob Sternfels, Global Managing Partner at McKinsey & Company, clarified that the barometer did provide a glimmer of hope.

Shifting Dynamics

Many believe that the significant changes witnessed in society, politics, technology, the environment, and climate change are interconnected with a decline in trust. Some argued that the combination of these changes ushered in a radical new reality if not an entirely new era.

More than half the top economists surveyed, conducted in association with Davos, said they thought the world economy would deteriorate this year.

Teku, representing the Amazon Sacred Headquarters Alliance, stated, “We sought allies willing to join us in protecting one of the world’s most biodiverse regions.”

During the week in Davos, over sixty heads of state and government took the spotlight. Key figures included US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, President Ursula von der Leyen of the EU Commission, and President Zelenskyy of Ukraine.

Private conversations alongside public appearances characterized their engagements, with over 2800 participants, including academics, artists, and executives of international organizations.

“The world undeniably witnessed increased divisions on certain fronts, but the barometer highlights that, overall, international cooperation remarkably persevered over the past decade.”

First Day’s Global Affairs and Diplomatic Engagements at Davos 2024

Chinese Premier Li Qiang took the lead on the schedule, delivering a speech to investors and world business leaders. The address occurred against the backdrop of Beijing’s challenges in navigating a sluggish post-pandemic recovery and a downturn in the real estate sector.

Despite being a Russian ally, China faced pressure from Zelenskiy and Swiss authorities to play a role in concluding the conflict in Ukraine through active participation in peace negotiations.

Upon Davo’s arrival, Blinken, amidst Trump’s shadow, addressed the prestigious event. Notably, the preceding Monday marked Trump’s triumph in the inaugural Iowa Republican presidential campaign of 2024.

Chinese Premier Li addressed global investors amid Beijing’s post-pandemic recovery and real estate concerns. Simultaneously, the world’s elite began contemplating the prospects of a potential second term for Li in office.

Davos’s talks centered on the impact of the election on US foreign policy, especially Middle East conflicts.

The World Economic Forum will take place in Davos from January 15 to January 19, 2024.

Davos transformed its main retail avenue into an outdoor trade show during the event. The majority of attendees were not permitted to enter the main convention, where prominent world leaders participated.
