Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is a multilateral, regional organization that aims to promote economic and security cooperation among its ten members: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Established in August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration by the founding members, ASEAN has come of age. ASEAN’s contribution toward regional peace and prosperity is worth noting.

The organization aims to strengthen regional cooperation to foster economic growth, social progress, and cultural development in the region and promote regional peace and stability.

The ASEAN Charter serves as a firm foundation for achieving the ASEAN Community by providing legal status and institutional framework for ASEAN. It also codifies ASEAN norms, rules, and values; sets clear targets for ASEAN; and presents accountability and compliance. The ASEAN Charter entered into force on 15 December 2008 in the presence of ASEAN Foreign Ministers at the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta.

With the entry into force of the ASEAN Charter, ASEAN will henceforth operate under a new legal framework and establish several new organs to boost its community-building process. The ASEAN Charter is the legally binding agreement among the 10 ASEAN Member States.

It will also be registered with the Secretariat of the United Nations according to Article 102, Paragraph 1 of the Charter of the United Nations.

The ASEAN Summit is the highest policymaking body in ASEAN, comprising the Head of States or Government of ASEAN Member States. The ASEAN Summit is held twice annually at a time to be determined by the Chair of the ASEAN Summit in consultation with the other ASEAN Member States. The summit is to be hosted by the ASEAN Member State holding the ASEAN Chairmanship. The First ASEAN Summit was held in Bali, Indonesia, on 23-24 February 1976.
