Vietnam, Japan to enhance Defense Ties

Tokyo, 26 November 2021 (TDI): Vietnam’s Prime Minister, Pham Minh Chin noted that the relationship between Japan and Vietnam through defense cooperation is strong and is thriving between the two countries. Pham Minh Chin held a meeting with the Japanese Minister of Defense Kishi Nobuo in Tokyo, yesterday.

The Vietnamese Prime Minister also highlighted that Vietnam always sees Japan as a key and long-term partner in its foreign policy. Vietnam pursues independent and self-reliant foreign policy.

Moreover, the Premier also appreciated the Defense Ministers of both the states working together to increase cooperation. Earlier, they also signed an MOU on military medicine and cyber security cooperation.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chin also suggested further deepening of bilateral defense ties and asked for help to overcome war consequences. Whilst the Japanese Defense Minister on his part reaffirmed that Japan will continue cooperation with Vietnam in multiple sectors.

He stressed the need for enhanced exchanges between the military forces and the transfer of defense equipment and technology. They will also collaborate with Vietnam in search and rescue, and United Nations peace-keeping, the Minister noted.

Pham Minh Chin’s Visit to Japan

Prime Minister Pham landed in Japan at the invitation of his Japanese counterpart, Kishida Fumio, on Monday for a 4-day official visit. He is accompanied by Minister of National Defense, Phan Van Giang and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bui Thanh Son.

The visit provided an opportunity for the Premier to exchange views with leaders of the Japan Business Federation (Keidanren) and host leaders of major Japanese firms, as well.

Japan and Vietnam established diplomatic relations 48 years ago in 1973. They are looking to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of their strong relations in 2023.
