Overview of History

Vietnam became part of French Indochina in 1887. Moreover, Vietnam saw colonization from Japan as well during World War 2. By the end of the second world war, Việt Minh launched an August Resolution across the country sensing a power vacuum in Vietnam.

Việt Minh was a national independence coalition formed at Pác Bó by Hồ Chí Minh on 19 May 1941. The league fought for the independence of Vietnam from foreign powers.

Consequently, on September 2nd, 1945, Ho Chi Minh proclaimed the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam). Therefore, the day commemorates the memory of the Declaration of Independence of Vietnam at Ba Đình Square in Hanoi.

Vietnam proclaimed sovereignty from Japan and France on that day. However, in 1976 the two halves of Vietnam were united into one country. The name was also changed to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
