Caracas, 4 April 2022 (TDI): Felix Plasencia, the Venezuelan People’s Power Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with the Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey, Şevki Mütevellioğlu, in Caracas.
In the meeting, the officials discussed bilateral relations between Venezuela and Turkey. Furthermore, they discussed global political developments. Moreover, the Foreign Minister stated that “we forged a close relationship of cooperation and joint work with Turkey.”
According to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, both nations ratified mutual cooperation.
It further said that the mutual cooperation between the two countries is “based on fundamental values and principles for the full development of both peoples”.
The Turkish Embassy in Venezuela stated that Turkey and Venezuela will continue to deepen their cooperation in various fields.
Venezuela-Turkey Relations
Turkey and Venezuela have developed close ties based on diplomatic cooperation. Both countries established diplomatic ties in 1950. Due to geographical distance, cultural differences, and political interests, the relations between the two countries were limited.
Turkish Prime Minister Beşir Atalay visited Venezuela to attend the funeral of President Hugo Chavez. This marks the turning point in their relationship.
Since then, relations are growing on several fronts, including economic partnership and trade, development cooperation, and political collaboration. This improvement is due to Turkey’s policy of outreach to Latin American and Caribbean countries.
Furthermore, mutual high-level visits played an important role in strengthening ties. In 2017, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro visited Turkey.
During the visit, they held the Second Meeting of the Joint Cooperation Commission under the co-chairmanship of Foreign Ministers, Turkey, and Venezuela Business Forum, and the Venezuelan Export Products Exhibition.
These activities aimed to establish stronger ties between the nations. In addition, the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan paid an official visit to Caracas in 2018.
On this occasion, the Turkey-Venezuela Business Forum was also held. Venezuela has taken advantage of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum to renew its ties with European and other countries.
