Basseterre, 15 August 2022 (TDI): The Vice Minister for the Caribbean, Raúl LiCausi, attended the Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Navis, Terrance Drew, oath-taking ceremony as Venezuela’s special representative. The two sides also discussed ways to strengthen bilateral bonds. 

After the oath-taking, the Vice Minister for the Caribbean of Venezuela also held a meeting with the Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis. During the meeting, LiCausi extended the President of Venezuela’s best wishes to Terrance Drew. Moreover, the two sides also discussed ways to strengthen bilateral ties and cooperation.

Venezuela and Saint Kitts and Nevis

Venezuela has had a long-standing relationship with the people of Saint Kitts and Nevis. During the past few years, Venezuela has offered much aid, including $6 million for the Sugar Workers to build homes on Wellington Road and small enterprises.

Moreover, Venezuela and Saint Kitts and Nevis have collaboration agreements in the Agriculture and Food sector as well as regional air interconnection through Petrocarible Energy Supply Agreement.

Petrocarible Energy Supply Agreement

In June 2005, Venezuela initiated the Petrocaribe Energy Supply Agreement and initiated a Cooperation Agreement for Energy Security among the Caribbean and Central American Countries. The late President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, originally started it. Through this agreement, 32% of oil consumption of both sides was met.

Since its establishment, the Petrocarible agreement has been a significant source of funding for both countries that import oil in the region. To buy oil from Venezuela, the agreement created a financing system with terms that shift depending on price variations within predetermined parameters.

Prime Minister Terrance Drew

Dr Terrance Drew, the new Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis was elected to his office on August 5, 2022. Drew said, “I have committed to defending the principles of good government, and openness”.

Additionally, Prime Minister Drew has led Saint Kitts and Nevis Labor Party (SKNLP), for less than a year. His party won six of the eleven parliamentary seats in the elections.
