USAID, WFP provide humanitarian assistance to Lebanon
USAID and WFP will contribute $29.5 Million to Lebanon amid Global Food Crisis

Beirut, 20 August 2022 (TDI): The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the UN World Food Programme (WFP) have contributed $15 million in humanitarian assistance to Lebanon.

The United States keeps providing assistance to underprivileged people in Lebanon as the Global Food Crisis and the conditions are deteriorating and worsening. This time, WFP will give life-saving food aid to needy families.

In the next months, 300,000 underprivileged Lebanese will start receiving home deliveries. So far, USAID has contributed almost $125 million in humanitarian assistance to WFP and non-governmental organizations in Beirut during this year. Notably, this includes nearly $119 million for the food supply.

USAID’s support additionally contains $14.5 million in financial assistance funds to help vegetable and grain producers boost local agricultural production by providing resources like seedlings and seeds.

In addition, because dairy is a good dietary source in Lebanon, USAID will provide local dairy producers with feed, animal health services, and resources to assure excellent milk yield.

Technological support, education, and matching funds are also offered to agribusinesses. This is to boost efficiency and minimize dependency on imports.

Also, stimulating development in the processed food industry and enhancing the supply of cheap locally produced foods is a goal.

Total Contribution of $29.5 Million 

Beirut will get $29.5 million due to the US’ renewed efforts to deal with the global food shortage.

USAID will provide $29.5 million in international relief and $14.5 million in financial assistance to help and secure disadvantaged people in Lebanon from increasing food inadequacy.

Also, a component of the newly unveiled $2.76 billion financial assistance is to assist tackle the global food security crisis.

As Lebanon’s economic situation worsens, the buying power of poor communities falls, while essential food and petroleum costs rise. The conflict in Ukraine has a direct impact on Lebanon’s food imports as well as worldwide food commodities.
