US and UK security assistance to Ukraine
Since the unlawful seizure of Crimea in 2014, the UK and US have been the primary security partners for Ukraine. They have helped it boost its defense capabilities and counter Moscow’s aggression.
Ukraine is a key strategic partner for both US and UK that has undertaken significant efforts to modernize its military. It has also increased its interoperability with NATO over the years.
Hence, it remains an urgent security assistance priority to provide Ukraine with the equipment it needs to defend itself against Russia’s war.
Since January 2021, the US has invested more than $8.2 billion in security assistance to Ukraine.
So far in FY2022, the US Department of Defense has provided $950 million in security assistance. This assistance is given under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI).
The UK is also leading the way in providing vital military assistance to Ukraine. UK announced an additional £1 billion of military support at the NATO Leaders’ Summit this year.
This announcement brought the total UK military support since the outbreak of war to £2.3 billion – more than any country other than the US.
US-UK Bilateral Relations
The US has no closer ally than the UK. Following the end of the American Revolution in 1783, the UK officially recognized American independence. It was in the year 1785 that the two countries established diplomatic relations.
The strong relationship between the US and the UK reflects their common democratic ideals and values.
The US and the UK coordinate closely to respond to dangerous and destabilizing actions by Moscow that threaten global security.
Mutual trade and investment are at the heart of the prosperity of both states. Their commitment to free market values is the reason behind their thriving economies.
