50th Anniversary Celebration of Auckland and Los Angeles Sister Act

Auckland, 27 July 2022 (TDI): United States Embassy in New Zealand celebrated the 50th anniversary of honoring sister city ties of Auckland and Los Angeles on Tuesday. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade Auckland, AmCham, and Auckland Council were part of this celebration.

Consul General Nelson celebrated the 50 years and expressed warm wishes for this relationship between the cities. It has been 50 years since Auckland and Los Angeles became sister cities. During this time, trade, shipping, and flight patterns have significantly impacted the relationship between the USA and New Zealand.

In addition, the Business Hub, Invest Auckland, stated that this relationship could provide many opportunities to strengthen ties between cities in sports, climate action, and creative industries.

Auckland & Los Angeles Sister City Ties

The informal interaction between Los Angeles and Auckland began in 1971, concurrent with the launch of Air New Zealand’s service to that city. It was formally established in 1972, the first of Auckland’s sister city partnerships.

The two cities have been close friends and collaborators for 50 years, working together to build air connections and expand corporate collaboration prospects. They have partnered to promote trade, education, sport, culture, and community projects in addition to tourism and investment.

Furthermore, The Tripartite Economic Alliance‘s establishment in 2014 enhanced the bond between the two parties. It was created between the cities of Los Angeles, Guangzhou, and Auckland for three years that was then extended in 2019.

Many Annual Tripartite summits and associated events were held between 2015 and 2019. For firms, entrepreneurs, and investors in Auckland, the Alliance established a ‘platform’ and unlocked doors to significant and valuable economic, trade, and investment prospects.

Lastly, this alliance has produced increased trilateral corporate activity and, more recently, discussions about climate change and emergency preparedness. It has also been a fruitful partnership.
