Buenos Aires, 20 January 2022 (TDI): The United States Secretary of State, Antony Blinken met with the Argentine Foreign Minister, Santiago Cafiero. Both officials discussed matters of mutual interest.

Blinken congratulated Cafiero for the election of Argentina as President of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). Moreover, US Secretary emphasized the significance of their collaboration to promote democracy and Human Rights in their continent. 

US and Argentina Relationship: An overview

The United States established diplomatic relations with Argentina in 1823 after Argentina gained independence from Spain. The relationship between the US and Argentina revolves around science, technology, education, trade, regional peace, human rights, cultural exchange, non-proliferation, social inclusion, and many more areas.

The two countries are major partners, and Argentina is one of the largest trading partners of the US. For instance, in 2012, $ 23 billion was spent on trading goods and services. About imports and export, the US exports to Argentina are organic chemicals, plastic, petroleum, machinery.

Argentina imports mineral fuel, iron, steel, aluminum, wine, iron, and processed food to the US. In 2013, the US invested more or less $ 20 billion through a bilateral investment treaty. In addition to that, more than 500 US companies are located in Argentina.

Regarding multilateral relations, both countries interact in an international organization where they are member states. For instance, both interact in the United Nations (UN), the Organization of American States (OAS), the G-20, the International Atomic Energy (IAEA), and the World Trade Organization (WTO). 

Quick facts about UNHRC 

The Human Rights Council is the inter-governmental body of the UN responsible for the promotion and protection of human rights globally. Moreover, the UNHRC is the body that addresses human rights violations and recommends solutions to deal with them. 

The Council counts 47 United Nations Member States, elected by the General Assembly for a three-year mandate. Furthermore, the members represent the different geographic regions of the globe. 

The Presidency of the UNHRC consists of one President and four Vice Presidents representing the five regional groups serving for one year. For instance, the regional groups are Eastern European states, Western European, Latin American and Caribbean states, Asia Pacific, and the African States. The current President of the UNHRC is Argentina.
