US Stands for Syria in UN

New York, 16 September 2021 (TDI): The United Nations Security Council met on September 15 to discuss the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria.

The United States mission to the UN urged to stop politicizing assistance and remarked that aid should not be used as a weapon against those who disagree with Assad’s brutal policies. Ambassador Jeffrey DeLaurentis, in his speech, described several developments contributing to the deterioration in Syria. He noted that the primary services are not getting to the people to help them fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

He stated that resources to diagnose and treat COVID are limited; international organizations warn that tests will deplete soon. And, with the arrival of winter, many Syrians will need humanitarian protection. DeLaurentis mentioned three aspects of the situation: The United States concern in Dara’a, the northwest, Rukban, and the Al-Hol camp; progress and updates from cross border aid operations.

DeLaurentis declared that the United States condemns Assad’s regime’s ruthless assault that has killed civilians, displaced thousands, and led to food shortages and medicine. According to the Ambassador, two years have passed since the Syrian regime allowed a humanitarian convoy to enter Rukban. DeLaurentis briefly mentioned that the World Food Program was able to dispatch a humanitarian convoy to Sarmada in Idlib with the necessary resources to cover the needs in the northwest.

With that, DeLaurentis reaffirms the commitment of the United States to bring aid to Syrians in need, as he recognizes the immense need for help, and he deems it necessary to address it.
