Speaker Nancy Pelosi visits Singapore
The US Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi visited Singapore on Monday as part of her Indo-Pacific visit

Singapore, 1 August 2022 (TDI): The United States (US) Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi visited Singapore on Monday.

On Sunday, the Speaker announced on Twitter that she would be visiting countries in the Indo-Pacific region. Consequently, one of her delegation’s first stops was Singapore.

Speaker’s visit to Singapore

Nancy Pelosi visited Singapore as part of the Indo-Pacific trip. She visited the US Embassy in Singapore and met with the Marine Detachment working there.

During her meeting, she expressed gratitude to the team for serving the nations overseas on behalf of Congress. Furthermore, she highlighted their importance in strengthening relations between Singapore and the United States of America.

Meeting with the President of Singapore

The Speaker also visited Istana, the Presidential mansion in Singapore. There she was welcomed by the President of Singapore, Halimah Yacob, herself.

In the meeting with the President of Singapore, Nancy Pelosi discussed the relations between Singapore and the US. They also discussed how they can achieve the goal of making the Indo-Pacific region free and open.

Moreover, the Speaker also expressed gratitude to the President for hosting the Navy sailors and Mariners in Singapore.

Meeting with Prime Minister of Singapore

At Istana, the Speaker also met with the Prime Minister of Singapore, Minister Lee Hsien Loong, and other Cabinet officials.

In the meeting with the Prime Minister, the two sides discussed ways to deepen US economic engagement through initiatives such as the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework.

Moreover, they also discussed issues of regional importance such as the war in Ukraine, tensions between Taiwan and mainland China, and climate change.

The Prime Minister welcomed America’s initiatives to help the Pacific region. Moreover, he also highlighted the importance of stable US-China relations for regional peace and security.

The two sides also discussed ways to strengthen and achieve their common goal of rule-based international order in the world.

Meeting with Finance Minister of Singapore

The Congressional delegation led by Nancy Pelosi also met the Deputy Prime Minister and the Finance Minister of Singapore, Lawrence Wong.

The meeting saw a discussion on opportunities of working together to help the Indo-Pacific region in development. They also discussed helping the nations in advancing their policies and actions for security and prosperity.

The Finance Minister also informed that they had discussed the crucial role America is playing and has to continue playing for regional peace, security, and progress.

Consequently, they affirmed the strengthening of the bilateral ties between Singapore and the US.

Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Indo-Pacific Region

On Sunday, the Speaker announced that she would be leading a congressional delegation to the Indo-Pacific region.

The aim of the visit is to strengthen America’s relations with the countries in the Indo-Pacific region.

According to Nancy Pelosi, the visit will discuss issues with common interests in mutual security, economic partnership, and democratic governance in the Indo-Pacific region.

While announcing this visit, the Speaker said that she was looking forward to holding bilateral meetings that would help in strengthening America’s partnerships with other states.

Moreover, she also deliberated that the delegation would address key issues for peace and security. She also informed that they will address problems of economic growth and trade, the COVID-19 pandemic, human rights, and democratic governance in states.

Fundamentally, she explained that America under Biden’s administration is committed to strategic engagement in the Indo-Pacific region. Additionally, she explained that a flourishing Indo-Pacific was important for the prosperity and peace of the whole globe.

Up till now, the Speaker has only disclosed visiting the states of Malaysia, South Korea, Singapore, and Japan.
