Washington DC/Baku, 12 May 2022 (TDI): The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken held a telephonic conversation with Ilham Aliyev, the President of Azerbaijan.
They discussed various points of mutual interest. Secretary Blinken congratulated Azerbaijan on the 99th birthday anniversary of national hero and leader Heydar Aliyev.
Moreover, they discussed how the US can support the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Furthermore, Secretary Blinken also expressed that the US is ready to support the process of delimitation and demarcation of borders between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
In addition, President Ilham Aliyev informed the Secretary of recent developments in the peace process. He explained that Armenia has accepted the five principles presented by Azerbaijan for normalizing relations with Armenia.
Likewise, he stressed that Azerbaijan is ready to start negotiations on a peace agreement along these principles. Also, President Ilham Aliyev noted that Azerbaijan has established the national commission to begin the process of delimitation and demarcation of borders.
Meanwhile, the Azerbaijani President highlighted the importance of opening transport and communication lines between the countries and the USA.
Additionally, the officials also addressed issues related to the humanitarian agenda between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Moreover, they discussed energy security owing to the challenges created by the Russia-Ukraine War. Both parties agreed to cooperate in the energy sector.
Furthermore, the sides exchanged views on the opportunities for enhancing bilateral dialogue between the two countries. They also touched on the process of democratization in Azerbaijan.
Finally, the officials highlighted the role of the intergovernmental commission in increasing bilateral ties.
Azerbaijan-US Relations
The United States and Azerbaijan have a robust bilateral relationship centered around shared international goals.
Having established relations in 1992, the two countries work to cooperate on energy security, expand trade and investment, and combat terrorism and transnational threats.
Moreover, the United States supports Azerbaijan’s sovereignty over the Nagorno-Karabakh region and supports the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process.
