Washington, 4 May 2024 (TDI): US President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Ambassador Thomas issued a statement commemorating the World Press Freedom Day on 3 May 2024
US President Biden said, “On World Press Freedom Day, the United States calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all journalists behind bars for simply doing their jobs. And we call for the protection of journalists everywhere, including during military operations.”
Moreover, President Biden said that Journalists play an essential role in sustaining democracy and informing the public on every occasion.
They expose corruption, government policies, Wars, and many more. They sacrificed their lives and freedom and faced life-threatening situations to do their work.
In addition, President Biden said, we remember how journalists and other media workers risked their lives. 2023 was a most dreadful year for Gaza’s journalists. Around 300 journalists, including American journalists, were detained globally.
Furthermore, President Biden said that the USA would work with international communities to counter spyware misuse and provide security to media houses.
Lastly, in response to the global crackdown on Press Freedom, President Biden said, “I will take executive action, including sanctions and visa bans, against those who silence the press. We stand with journalists and media workers for press freedom and support their right to do their jobs.”
