Washington DC, 16 September 2022 (TDI): US Deputy Secretary of State, Wendy Sherman, met with Vice Foreign Minister of Republic of Korea Cho Hyundong to discuss US-ROK cooperation on a vast array of important bilateral, regional, and global issues.

Both ministers reaffirmed the unbreakable US-ROK Alliance and the commitment to achieving the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

In addition, they discussed the significance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, strengthening trilateral cooperation between the United States, the Republic of Korea, and Japan, and continuing international efforts to aid Ukraine.

The Deputy Secretary emphasized the Republic of Korea’s important role as a partner in solving the main problems of the twenty-first century.

Both ministers emphasized the urgent need to enhance investments in renewable energy technology in order to combat the climate problem and strengthen resilient supply chains.

She underlined the United States’ commitment to working with the ROK through a consultative system as the Inflation Reduction Act is implemented. The Inflation Reduction Act restricts trade freedom for South Korea given under US-Korea free trade agreement.

She also aimed to keep open lines of communication on the ROK’s concerns with specific provisions of the law.

In addition, they discussed ways to expand cooperation with the Pacific Islands and highlighted the countries’ collaboration on global health and food security.

US-Korea Relations 

The United States and the Republic of Korea have a long history of collaboration based on mutual trust, shared ideals of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, shared strategic interests, and a lasting friendship.

Together, the two nations tackle regional and global dangers and strengthen their respective economies.

The United States has kept Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marine forces in the Republic of Korea (ROK) to fulfill its obligation under the U.S.-ROK Mutual Defense Treaty to assist the ROK in defending itself.
