US Mission to the UN Expresses Support for UNITAMS´ Mandate

-

New York, 16 September 2021 (TDI): The USA mission to the UN expressed its support to the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) mandate to assist Sudan’s democratic transition to protect the civilians, and encourage implementation of the Juba Peace Agreement.

In the UN Security Council meeting, Sudanese activist for women’s rights Hala Al-Karib presented an overview of the situation in Sudan for the women. Al-Karib, in her speech, referred to the women living in conflict areas like Darfur, stating that they suffer from ethnic marginalization and poverty, confined to informal labor, which puts them at risk of rape, displacement, and death.

The USA Ambassador Richard Mills stated that the root causes persist in many areas, suffering from conflict, abuse of human rights, and large-scale population displacements. Also, Mills mentioned the obligation of the Sudanese government to hold accountable those responsible for perpetrating human rights violations.

With that, Miller announced that the US is committed to working closely with the transition government, UNSC members, and other stakeholders to support Sudan because UNITAMS’ target is to build trust between Darfuris and the Joint Force.
