US Imposes Sanctions on Russian RT

Washington (TDI): The United States has imposed new sanctions on the Russian state media outlet RT, accusing it of engaging in covert cyber intelligence and influence operations targeting nations across Europe, Africa, and South America.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken revealed that RT had been involved in activities designed to undermine democracies and interfere in the sovereign affairs of various countries.

Blinken also alleged that the network possessed cyber skills and was involved in covert information influence operations and military procurement.

The US has nominated three entities and two individuals for their connections to what it describes as “Russia’s destabilizing actions” abroad.

Blinken also announced a joint diplomatic campaign with the UK and Canada to unite allies against Russian disinformation and covert influence efforts.

Earlier this month, US authorities unsealed an indictment against two RT employees and seized 32 internet domains, accusing them of interfering in the November presidential elections.

In a statement following the announcement, Blinken outlined three steps the US is taking to counter what it sees as RT’s malicious operations aimed at influencing US elections.

Russia, however, has dismissed these charges, denying any attempts to interfere in the US electoral process.
