Ramstein-Miesenbach, 9 September 2021 (TDI): On Wednesday, the US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken met with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas during his visit to Ramstein Air Base. The State Secretary expressed his gratitude towards the German government for its 20-year partnership in Afghanistan.
During the meeting, Blinken reiterated his appreciation for the German coalition in Afghanistan and supporting the United States’ evacuation efforts in Kabul. Currently, the Ramstein Air Base, Germany, is being used to assist vulnerable individuals from Kabul with consolidated efforts of the German and American governments, respectively. At present, more than 30,000 people have already transited through the Ramstein Air Base, given the political and humanitarian turmoil in Afghanistan.
The Taliban seized control of Afghanistan in August, with President Ashraf Ghani and other top officials leaving the country. The episode comes after the United States decided to withdraw its remnant troops from Kabul, thus, concluding a 20-year war on terrorism.
