US Considers Major Troop Deployment as Iran War Intensifies

Washington (TDI): The United States is weighing the deployment of thousands of additional troops to the Middle East as its war with Iran enters a dangerous new phase, according to a report by Al Jazeera citing US officials familiar with the discussions.

The proposed move would deepen Washington’s involvement in a conflict that has already stretched into its third week, with escalating violence across the region and rising global economic concerns.

While no final decision has been made yet, the potential deployment is being considered as part of broader military planning aimed at expanding US operational options against Iran.

Officials say the additional forces could be used to secure key strategic assets, including vital oil shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz and critical infrastructure linked to Iran’s energy exports.

Control of such locations is seen as central to limiting Tehran’s economic capabilities and ensuring global energy flows, which have already been severely disrupted by the conflict.

The war, which began with large-scale US and Israeli strikes on Iranian military and nuclear targets, has rapidly expanded into a broader regional confrontation.

Iran has responded with missile and drone attacks on US bases and allied infrastructure across the Gulf, including energy facilities in countries such as Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

Despite previously pledging to avoid prolonged foreign wars, US President Donald Trump is now facing mounting pressure to escalate military efforts as the conflict intensifies.

Sending ground troops would mark a significant shift, potentially entrenching the United States in another long-term military engagement in the Middle East.

At least 13 US service members have been killed and around 200 wounded so far, while the Pentagon is reportedly seeking more than $200bn in additional funding to sustain operations.

International reaction has been mixed, with some allies hesitant to become directly involved. At the same time, global markets have been rattled by disruptions to oil and gas supplies, with prices surging amid fears of prolonged instability.
