Washington DC, 28 February 2023 (TDI): The United States (US) Secretary of State, Antony Blinken has issued a statement congratulating the United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU) on their agreement to sign the Windsor Framework.

The agreement is an important step forward in their relationship. As it provides a foundation for cooperation between the two sides in a range of areas, including security, trade, and rule of law.

US Secretary hailed the agreement as a major victory for both sides. Moreover, he expressed his confidence that it will help foster closer relations and collaboration between the United Kingdom and European Union.

Also, he stated that the agreement “provides a solid platform for strengthening our shared interests, advancing democracy and human rights, and tackling the global challenges we all face.”

Furthermore, he praised both sides for their commitment to making the agreement a success, noting that it “represents a commitment by both sides to work together in a spirit of partnership and trust.”

He assured that the US stands ready to work with our European allies to build a future of cooperation and prosperity based on the agreements enshrined in the Windsor Framework.

In the same vein, the US Secretary wished both parties success in their efforts to foster closer ties and build a stronger partnership going forward.

Previously, a meeting was also held between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and UK Foreign Secretary James Cleverly to discuss ongoing negotiations between the UK and EU on the implementation of the Northern Ireland Protocol.

Background of Windsor Framework

For the record, the EU and the UK have signed a vital agreement known as the Windsor Framework. The agreement is intended to strengthen cooperation between the two sides after the end of the Brexit negotiations.

It includes provisions for security, trade, and law enforcement cooperation, as well as mutual recognition of civil judicial decisions.

In addition, this agreement serves to facilitate cooperation on a wide range of issues and promotes closer ties between the two sides in the post-Brexit period.

Thus, US Department Spokesperson endorsed that the Windsor Framework agreement will greatly benefit Northern Ireland, as it provides for both sides to continue to recognize the Belfast Agreement.
