Nunavut, 14 September 2021 (TDI): On Monday, US Defense Department announced the joint Search and Rescue (SAR) operation conducted in Nunavut, Canada, on September 6. The joint Arctic exercise was organized in a close association between Coast Guards of the United States and Canada, alongside the Canadian Rangers.
The Search and Rescue (SAR) operation aimed to increase interoperability in critical situations and further enhance the speed and efficiency required for such operations, especially in the northern waters. The Canadian Rangers and Coast Guard partnered with the United States for the drill, with their top leaders overseeing the exercise near Resolute Bay, Nunavut. Admiral Karl Schultz from the United States helicoptered to Cutter Healy, the US’ largest icebreaker, off the coast of Resolute; Meanwhile, the Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard, Mario, and Neil joined Admiral Karl aboard the ship.
Such joint exercises aim to help the Arctic nations prepare for fast-paced rescue operations in the middle of a crisis since the Arctic is observing increased marine traffic from resource extraction companies, cruise ships, and other sources at present.
